Daxxify – the new, longer lasting Botox alternative

A new anti-wrinkle treatment that could last twice as long as Botox? Where do we sign up?!

Daxxify (DaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) is the latest treatment approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 8th September 2022 and it won’t be long until it hits UK shores.

With the new treatment expected to be widely available for use on US patients in 2023, it’s time to discover everything there is to know about Botox’s latest competition.

What is Daxxify

Daxxify is the first (and currently the only) peptide-formulated wrinkle relaxing injectable treatment on the market. It is a neuromodulator belonging to the same family as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeaveau.

Daxxify works in the same way as Botox, freezing and smoothing wrinkles by paralysing the muscles underneath the skin with a small amount of toxin. This causes the muscle and connective tissues to relax, smoothing and refreshing the skin.

Daxxify was approved after clinical trials showed that 98% of 2700 patients had little to no wrinkles one month after injections. Further to that, half of patients were still wrinkle-free six months later, and some patients showed positive results for up to nine months.

What makes Daxxify different from Botox?

The results of a Daxxify treatment last for much longer than Botox – anywhere between six to nine months compared to the three to four months of results for Botox. This means less treatments are required for your customers – making Daxxify far more purse friendly than Botox. It can also help you manage your workload and free up appointments so you can book more clients in – a win-win situation for everyone!

The chemical makeup of Daxxify is also different to Botox and other neuromodulators. Botox is made using human serum albumin – the most abundant protein found in human blood. Daxxify doesn’t contain any human or animal products though, it’s made only from peptides or amino acids.

Where can Daxxify be used?

Currently Daxxify is only approved for treating the glabella lines on the forehead. These are the short lines found between the eyebrows and extending up into the forehead. However, it’s believed that eventually Daxxify will be approved for more medical uses. SImilar to Botox, we could see it being used to treat issues like migraines, muscle spasms, and excessive underarm sweating.

Are there any side effects?

The side effects of Daxxify are no different to any of the other toxins on the market. According to Revance, the most common side effects during the trials were headache, followed by drooping eyelids, and facial asymmetry. However, these side effects were experienced by only 6% of participants.

Because the effects of Daxxify last longer than Botox, it might be more suited to those who have tried injectable treatments before and were happy with the results. Like Botox, once injected the results of Daxxify cannot be undone and clients will have to wait for them to wear off.

We’re excited to see what the future holds for Daxxify and the aesthetics industry – check back for more information on UK approval and uses as soon as we have it.
